Bemidji State
University Reduces Chemistry Lab Waste by Almost 35% With the help of a MnTAP intern, Bemidji State University
chemistry labs decreased lab waste by nearly 35 percent
and reduced reagent use by 33 liters per year. The department
estimates $1,800 in annual savings from purchasing less
reagent and reduced disposal cost. By reducing inventory,
it also has recovered storage space, allowing for better
organization.
Minnesota Department of Agriculture Eliminates Methylene Chloride Use in the Lab Eliminated 99 gallons of methylene chloride use annually. Productivity increases and reduced costs saved $39,900 a year.
Selecting
a Laboratory
Most companies that produce a product or provide a service
eventually may need to contract for the testing of industrial
waste, wastewater, air or soil. Before purchasing laboratory
services, be informed about the types of tests you may
need and the services that are offered to you. This
fact sheet outlines what you should consider before
selecting a laboratory.
Latex
Paint
Latex
Paint Recycling Facility Opening Amazon Environmental
Inc.'s Minnesota facility offers the public and private
sectors a one-stop latex paint recycling service.
Recycled
Latex Paint In Minnesota the market for recycled-content
latex paint is growing, with more purchasers and painters
recognizing a high-quality product at a lower price
than non-recycled latex paint.
Reprocessed
Paint Hirshfield's, a paint manufacturer in Minneapolis,
worked with Hennepin County to reprocess interior latex
paint from the county hazardous waste collection program.
Lead
Benchmark Electronics, in Winona, initiated a lead-free surface
mount technology assembly option
for its customers, with funding through a state pollution prevention grant.
Listed
Metals in Specified Products In 1991, the Minnesota
Legislature passed laws requiring reduction of four
metals in specified products. These metalslead,
mercury, hexavalent chromium and chromiumall have
known adverse effects on public health and the environment.
Managing
Scrap Metal, Catalytic Converters & Wheel Weights
This fact sheet discusses management of scrap materials
commonly found in the automotive repair and salvage
industries.
Remodeling or Renovating a Home with Lead-Based Paint If conducted improperly,
renovations in housing with lead-based paint can create
serious health hazards to workers and occupants by releasing
large amounts of lead dust and debris.
TRI
Lead Rule The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
announced on April 17, 2001 that it will proceed with
its Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) rule to significantly
expand the information available to the public about
lead emissions in their communities. The TRI lead rule
lowers the reporting thresholds for lead and lead compounds
to 100 pounds because lead and lead compounds are persistent
bioaccumulative toxic (PBT) chemicals.
Lead-acid
Batteries
Spent
Lead-Acid BatteriesRequirements for Generators
If not properly managed, spent lead-acid batteries may
leak or spill and cause lead and/or acid contamination
of the soil and ground water. Businesses that generate,
collect or accumulate spent lead-acid batteries are
responsible for proper storage and containment of leaks.
Spent
Lead Acid BatteriesRequirements for Transporters
If not properly managed, spent lead-acid batteries may
leak or spill and cause lead and/or acid contamination
of the soil and ground water. Businesses that store
spent lead acid batteries between trips to the reclaimer
must follow these storage rules. And, all for-hire transporters
of spent lead acid batteries must meet Minnesota Department
of Transportation (MnDOT) regulations.
Leaks
Listening for Leaks MnTAP staff can help you find compressed air and steam trap leaks using an ultrasonic leak detector.

on the Mir Space Station to benefit from using freeze-dried
products. They may be advantageous right in your facility.
