Energy
Businesses have been hit with rapidly rising energy bills. Energy efficiency benefits businesses by reducing costs,
reducing the impact on the environment and helping to
ensure that a reliable and secure source of energy is
maintained for the future.
Significant air emissions are released
when electricity is produced. In Minnesota, one-fourth
of the energy-related emissions of carbon dioxide, sulfur
dioxide, lead and mercury are from generating electric
power. Industry uses over 50 percent of this electricity.
Reducing electricity use will help improve Minnesotas
air quality.
The largest industrial energy users
in Minnesota are the metal casting, mining, paper products
and petroleum refining industries. Other significant
energy consumers include the chemical products, food
processing and printing industries.
These Web pages offer ideas and resources
to businesses for conserving energy and cutting costs.
Businesses that have not previously looked at energy
efficiency are likely to save 10 to 20 percent off their
energy bill with little or no effort.
The U.S. Department of Energy identified
eight "Industries
of the Future." They need to use large amounts
of heat
and energy to physically or chemically transform materials.
Collectively, they supply 90% of the materials vital
to our
economy and directly employ over 3 million people. See aluminum,
