Opportunities for Pulp and Paper Mills
Minnesota’s pulp and paper industry consists of nine facilities, which collectively use more than 227 million kWh and 12 million therms annually. Additionally, wastewater and chemicals are large waste streams in such facilities.
Manufacturing pulp and paper can result in significant environmental impacts. Chemicals used during the pulping and bleaching processes are emitted to the air and discharged in wastewater. However, alternative solutions exist and technologies allow you to lessen your footprint while lowering operating costs.
These web pages will provide you with more information for reducing energy use and wastewater in your facility.
The Sappi Cloquet paper mill won a 2009 Governor's Awards for Excellence in Waste and Pollution Prevention for implementing changes in the pulping process that reduced the amounts of several sulfide compounds being emitted.
