Buying into Green

Turn your facility green by incorporating environmentally preferable purchasing (EPP)—green purchasing. EPP is buying products and services that have the least negative impact on the environment. Going green can cut emissions, reduce solid waste and save you money.

New green
For facilities just starting to green, the following list of actions can have immediate impact.

  • Ask suppliers about environmentally friendly alternatives to your current products.
  • Install energy efficient lighting (check into utility rebates).
  • Request shipments in reusable packaging.
  • Buy appropriately-sized lots to minimize waste. Buy in bulk where feasible.
  • Use less-toxic cleaners.

Green for good
Keep your facility green by establishing a green purchasing policy. This allows employees and suppliers to know exactly what your minimum environmental requirements are.
Work with your suppliers to find the most environmentally friendly products that fit your needs and budget. Ask the following types of questions before purchasing.

  • Can the product be leased instead of purchased?
  • Can the product or its packaging be reused, refilled, recharged or reconditioned?
  • Can product packaging be eliminated or reduced?
  • Can the product be upgraded easily when technology advances come along?
  • Does the product contain recycled material?
  • Can the product be easily recycled?
