Where’s Your Waste?—Summer of Solutions

Eight Minnesota companies are taking advantage of MnTAP’s intern program this summer. MnTAP is sponsoring one student to work full time at each facility to research solutions to its specific waste-related challenges.

MnTAP is sponsoring the following projects this summer:

Aveda Corporation, Blaine, manufacturer of personal care products, wants to reduce water use in its facility while maintaining stringent quality guidelines for its hair care products.

Blandin Paper Company, Grand Rapids, paper mill, wants to increase the efficiency of the clay preparation area by recovering material for reuse and removing material from wastewater sent to the publicly owned treatment works (POTW).

Endocardial Solutions Inc., St. Paul, manufacturer of medical devices, wants to reduce the costs associated with the use of non-value added materials, while maintaining or exceeding existing product quality.

Hutchinson Technology Inc., Hutchinson, manufacturer of computer suspension assemblies for computer disc drives, wants to reduce water use and improve rinse water cleanliness.

Pro-Corn, Preston, ethanol production facility, wants to evaluate energy conservation opportunities, including motors, steam, process heat, and uninsulated piping or process areas.

Redwood Area Hospital, Redwood Falls, hospital, wants to reduce its volume of solid waste and waste that results in the emission of persistent bioaccumulative toxins (PBTs).

Rock Tenn, St. Paul, cardboard production facility, plans to evaluate energy conservation opportunities, focusing on uninsulated steam/condensate lines, uses for excess flash steam and non-contact cooling water as feed to the process areas.

Ultra Image, Big Lake, powder coating job shop, wants to reduce raw material use in the powder coating application process.

If you don’t have enough time or enough money to hire someone to work on solving waste-related problems (air, energy, water, solid or hazardous waste), contact MnTAP and ask about our student intern program.

Have an intern—hired by MnTAP—work on reducing your waste in the summer of 2005. Contact Deb McKinley, intern program coordinator, at 612/624-4697.

For more information on MnTAP's intern program, see the intern program Web page.
