Cultivate Relationships

My neighbors are great. When I tell them about upcoming house projects, they give me tips or show me tricks learned from their own experiences. They loan me tools. Because of these relationships I have an easier time managing my house. I’ve spent less time learning how to repair sash cords. I’ve saved money not needing to rent or buy an extension ladder or heavy gage wire cutters.

Similarly, cultivating relationships with your company’s suppliers and vendors could give your projects a boost. Suppliers and vendors often are a wealth of knowledge and experience. Get to know them and have them get to know your company. By understanding your company and its processes they can offer you tips and training, and suggest appropriate products and equipment.

Bob Armagost, JIT Powder Coating, asked his pretreatment chemical supplier about a solution for another area in the shop. The supplier helped Armagost come up with a low cost option using one of his products. A win-win solution.

You never know, your supplier—like a good neighbor—just might hand you a cold beer when you complete a big project.
